Last post, I introduced you to our utility room.

It turned out great and I love having a sink big enough to wash the pups
(that’s Vinney and although he doesn’t fuss, he’d rather be playing ball).

The old utility room was at the back of the house between our storage room (which I am standing in) and the bathroom (which you can see a speck of through the far doorway). The storage room was the original master bedroom. The utility room and bathroom were originally a screened in porch and eventually walled off to add these rooms, sometime in the 60’s we think.

The original bath (pic taken the day we moved in)

was filthy (Gabi and my Mom thoroughly cleaned it) yet serviceable, unless you wanted to plug something in.

It had no outlets!

We had an extension cord plugged into the utility room and brought it into the bathroom when we needed to use the blow dryer…

Ahhh the memories!

We’d suspected mold behind the shower tile and wanted to get that out and treated so that’s where we started the bathroom demo.

The wall you see behind the tile/backer board is exterior, there was no insulation. The white painted wood is a half wall from the original screened in porch.

The tile came down easily.

The interior wall was taken out as well as a small closet next to the tub.
There was so much mold and rotted wood, it was disgusting.
You can see light peeking in several places where Steve had to remove rotted wood, but you patched that up nice and tight, right B?
(I’m not a fan of critters and we’ve got our fair share that come around: birds, snakes, mice, skunks, ground hogs, stray cats… all of which could find a way in and some that have found a way in.)

The cast iron tub was the next task but it proved difficult.
It just shattered!

Steve opted to wait until the back door was removed and then haul it out as is.Β
Unfortunately we could not reuse this in one of the new bathrooms,
so it will be recycled!

On to dismantle the utility room!

What bozo’s!

I can’t really remember what they were doing here, but trust me no guns were fired in the demo of this room.
(They shoot a lot out back so maybe they took a break and were on their way back in, who knows, but it sure is good to see both of my boys smiling!!)

Washer and dryer out, next came the interior wall. That painted white wood is the original exterior siding and it was a beast to take out!

The toilet and vanity were removed as well as the sheet rock behind it, which revealed more exterior siding.
The angled boards you see to the right of the doorway is what the exterior siding was attached to.Β

The flooring came out next and then the sub floor.

We had a couple issues to fix!

First was repairing the floor joist that had been cut to install the original toilet. There had been a lot of leaking, as it was improperly installed, and subsequently a lot of rot!

No wonder this whole area of the bathroom was slowly sinking!

The next issue that needed repair was from an improperly installed exterior deck.
It was attached to the house without flashing so water seeped between the two and created, you guessed it…

a lot of rotted wood!

That was all replaced

and this area of the house was structurally re-enforced by Steve and his dad, Earl.

Even Valarie (Steve’s mom) got into the action.

Eventually all was repaired, floor leveled and new sub floor installed.

Great job everybody and thanks to Earl and Valarie for coming down to help!

If you’ve been keeping track, there is only one room left of the original house…

the kitchen!

That will stay intact until we have the new kitchen ready and I can hardly wait!!

As always, keep it simple but definitely do it with sass!

Kimberly
